4B: Defending Artistic Expression
Limited Capacity seats available

Artists play a critical role in all societies, exercising freedom of expression in its most direct form to exchange ideas, transmit culture, inspire, pose questions, give a voice to the voiceless and challenge existing powers.  In this session, with artists who fled persecution and fought censorship, we will examine the legal protections for art as a form of expression; and outline States’ obligations and civil society strategies to promote and protect it.

Resource Materials:

  1. Report of the Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Farida Shaheed to the UN Human Rights Council: The Right to freedom of artistic expression and creativity (A/HRC/23/34)
  2. UN Human Rights Council Resolution 27/31 (A/HRC/RES/27/31)
