Commissioner Reine Alapini-Gansou

African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights
Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders and Chair of the Study Group on Freedom of Association
Commissioner Reine Alapini-Gansou is the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders in Africa of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR). She also chairs the Commission's Study Group on Freedom of Association.

A member of the Commission since 2005, she served as Commission Chair from 2009 to 2011. Commissioner Gansou concurrently serves on the Commission's Working Groups on HIV and on the Rights of Older Persons and People with Disabilities. A member of the United Nations' International Commission of Inquiry on post-electoral violence in Cote d'Ivoire in 2011, she was also appointed to the UN Permanent Court of Arbitration.

A Beninese lawyer, Commisssioner Gansou is a Law Lecturer at the University of Abomey-Calavi in Benin. She is the recipient of the Prize of Human Rights for the Fiftieth year of African Countries Independence and Amsher’s Exceptional Contribution Award for her commitment for LGBT rights in Africa.
