John Foley is the Advocacy and Research Manager for the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project, and coordinates the organization’s national, regional, and international advocacy activities, including at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, and at the African Commission on Human & Peoples’ Rights. He conducts structured research activities and publications on challenges facing human rights defenders across east Africa. John has previously worked for the Africa Division of Human Rights Watch in the United Kingdom and United States. Prior to this, John spent five years working as a human rights lawyer in the United Kingdom. John holds undergraduate degrees in Politics and Philosophy (York, UK), Law (College of Law of England and Wales, London), and an LL.M in International Human Rights Law & Practice (Centre for Applied Human Rights, York, UK). He is a qualified solicitor (currently non-practicing) in England and Wales.
